“Ghanaians must Unite” – Ghana’s Consul General

by Kofi Ayim

Ghana’s Consul General in New York, Professor Samuel Amoako, has reiterated the need for Ghanaian unity both in Ghana and elsewhere. Speaking under the theme Celebrating Peace and Unity at a flag-raising ceremony at City Hall, Newark, New Jersey, to commemorate Ghana’s 62nd independence anniversary, the ever-conspicuous Consul General pointed out that in spite of recent challenges, Ghana is still a very stable and peaceful country. The quondam New York City college professor entreated Ghanaians in New Jersey to eschew their egos, shelve parochial interests, and come together for the benefit of all.

Professor Amoako has been working tirelessly to bring together a hitherto fractured and divided Ghanaian community in New Jersey. “We need unity at home and in the diaspora. In the diaspora, we need unity among individuals, we need unity among associations and we need unity among our chiefs. If we unite, it will be easy and extremely efficient and productive to deal with state and city institutions and access the help and support that we need and deserve as Ghanaians. It will equally be easy to interact with our missions, embassies, and consulates general. With unity, we will speak with one voice,” he pointed out. He added that a united Ghanaian body will serve as an umbrella organization and a clearinghouse for all member associations.

He hinted that after resolving issues within Ghanaian civic and non-profit organizations, he will work with (Ghanaian) traditional rulers and churches to come together in the spirit of unity. The affable diplomat commended the organizers of this year’s flag-raising ceremony, and singled out Nana Beyeeman Gyanasare V Piankohene of Akwamu Traditional Area for his kind sponsorship. His wife, Ms. Elizabeth Osei, was honored by the Office of the Mayor.

In a brief welcome remark, the Mayor of Newark, Hon. Ras Baraka, highlighted the need for Africans to develop their communities and to build bridges between them and African Americans. He philosophized that with his long ties to Ghana, he hopes the huge Ghanaian community in the City of Newark will respond in kind when he comes knocking.

The theme for his re-election campaign, “Forward Ever Backward Never” according to the Mayor, was inspired from a speech of Ghana’s first President Kwame Nkrumah.

In attendance at the capacity-filled rotunda were Deputy Mayor of International Relations and Diaspora Affairs, Hon. Ugo Nwaokoro; Deputy Mayor of the Of ce of Community Engagement, Hon. Jacqueline Quiles; President of Newark Municipal Council, Hon. Mildred Crump; and kings and queen mothers as well as friends of Ghana.
