“Let’s Make a Difference!” – Dr. Genevieve Kumapley

by E. Obiri Addo

Members of the medical profession have been reminded that their mandate in society is to make a difference in people’s lives rather than to amass wealth.

This reminder came from Dr. Genevieve Kumapley in a keynote address at the second Annual Gala of the Ghana Association for Medical Aid held at East Hanover, NJ on December 1st, 2018.

Dr. Kumapley is a Board-Certified Oncology/Pain and Palliative Care Pharmacist at St. Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ.

She narrated her personal journey that has included her struggle to raise three children, including one with Autism.

“In this process I realized how favored I am. When God wants you to do something, ask how, and then hear God’s plans for your life in spite of your circumstance. That is what I call God’s favor,” she said.

She explained that our human need, pain, as well as struggles can be sources of immense blessings. She reminded her colleagues in the medical profession that prayer alone won’t do it, adding, “we need money and resources to back up our prayers.”

Dr. Kumapley challenged her audience to be “the fulfillment of needs” by bringing hope to people with acute medical problems in Ghana.

“GAMA is making a difference. Let us make a difference with people who make a difference,” she stressed.

In a very dramatic gesture, she went round the hall with a simple but profound message: “If you can’t go, your money can go..!”

GAMA is the acronym for Ghana Association for Medical Aid, a 501c non-profit multinational organization of medical and non-medical professionals.

In partnership with the Caribbean Medical Mission members volunteer their time, energies and resources to serve the medical needs of people in Ghana and Jamaica. They also organize Annual Career Fairs for college-bound young people, and finance youth mentorship programs as well.

At this year’s gala the organization launched a new initiative, “The Zachary Yamba College Scholarship Fund” in honor of Dr. Zachary Yamba, Emeritus President of Essex County College.

GAMA embarks on its second medical mission to Ghana from January 20th to January 25th, 2019.
