NDC retains Amenfi West Seat

The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) candidate, Eric Afful has retained the Amenfi West seat for the ruling party after polling 15,809 of the 30,030 total votes cast in Tuesday’s by-election.
His closest contender, Mr. Paul Derkyi of the New Patriotic Party polled 13,076 of the lot to place second.
The two other candidates, Messrs Abraham Kwadwo Buadee of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and Elvis Adjei of the United Freedom Party (UFP) polled 1,032 and 113 respectively in the hotly contested poll necessitated by the sudden death of the incumbent, John Gyetuah.
Full results NDC: (Eric Afful, 41) – 15,809 NPP: (Paul Derkyi, 43) – 13,076 PPP: (Abraham Kwadwo Buadee, 41) – 1,032 UFP: (Elvis Adjei, 30) – 113
The constituency has a voter population of 62,364 and managed only a 49 percent turnout (30,561) and 531 rejected ballots.
NPP’s 43 percent in this by-election is an improvement over its 38.54 percent in the 2012 general elections. Considering the numbers obtained by the smaller parties, the NDC has a lot of work to do maintain the constituency and other constituencies where its supremacy is not as well grounded.
