NPP: Council of Elders wants Afoko out

The council of elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ghana’s largest opposition party has recommended that the party’s national chairman, Paul Afoko be suspended until 2016 after the general elections. This is after the council has met to consider complaints and events that have unfolded after the election of new executives of the party in 2013. Afoko and General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyapong are accused of causing division in the party with their penchant for unilateral action. The latest is the report made to the police about financial problems in the party involving the first deputy chairman Freddy Blay and Treasurer Abankwa Yeboah who declined an invitation by the police. This follows a warning to party members to desist from discussing party issues on the radio. The council of elders believe it it Afoko and Agyapong who sponsored the police report made by one Baah Achamfuor.

The NPP as things stand now is in a bit of a disarray as pressure mounts on Nana Addo to get rid of the chairman and the general secretary. It is not clear if the disciplinary committee of the party would go ahead and suspend Afoko for fear of the consequences.
