Prez Mills is dead; Mahama to be sworn in shortly

RadioXYZonline.com can sadly confirm that President John Evans Atta Mills has died.

The President died on Tuesday afternoon hours after announcing to Parliament that he was leaving for Nigeria.

He is said to have died from an acute cardiac arrest. President Mills on Saturday celebrated his 68th birthday on a low key with orphans in Accra.

A statement sent from the Presidency, Chief of Staff John Henry Martey Newman, said “it is with a heavy heart and deep sorrow that we announce the sudden untimely death of the President of the Republic of Ghana – His Excellency, John Evans Atta Mills.”

“The death occurred at the 37 Military Hospital this afternoon while receiving medical attention while receiving medical attention after being taken ill a few hours ago.”

President Mills recently returned from the United States of America after a routine check-up with his doctors. On his return, the president went round commissioning projects across the country.

He recently indicated his preparedness to contest the 2012 General Elections There were reports on the social media before his departure that he had passed away.

This makes him the first president since Ghana’s independence to have died while in office. His demise brings to mind death of Nigeria’s former President Yar’ Adua.

Vice President Mahama is expected broadcast to the nation on the development in due course.
