South Africa: Film Banned in South Africa to Screen for the First Time in 44 Years
For the first time in 44 years the first South African independent film Joe Bullet will be screened.
Produced in 1971 it was one of the first local films to feature an all African cast. It starred Ken Gampu and Abigail Kubeka and centers on the story of a local soccer team who fall prey to a mysterious gangster.
The film was independently released in 1973 in the Eyethu cinema in Soweto, and after only two screenings, the film was banned by the then Apartheid government. It was then unbanned by the Minister of Communication but never released.
And now for the first time after restoration the film will be distributed and screened.
