Summer ‘16: How ASOS Africa x Chichia is Going to Get You Ready!

Summer ’16 is upon us and you have got to get your wardrobe right for the festivals and outdoor concerts and family picnics and pool parties and cookouts …whew! ASOS Africa is launching their 13th collection in collaboration with Tanzanian-born, London-based textile guru, Christine Mhando. The collection’s focal specialty? Heavy prints, which merge Christine’s African roots and London street-swag. This exclusive collection has been produced by Kenyan clothing manufacturer SOKO, in support of the community of local Kenyan craftsmen and women.
Christine (IG: @chichiagram) graduated from Kent University, with honours, in 2002, after which she gained experience working for notable designers and womenswear brands. With all this exposure under her belt, she founded Chichia in 2007, where her label’s signature khanga prints are edgy, with modern silhouettes. She shared her major keys to successfully break into the universe of fashion design with The Big Music Project, where she highlighted setting realistic goals and acquiring formal training in fashion design as contributing factors to her rise in the industry. Christine’s designs have been featured in Vogue Italia, and Marie Claire. ASOS Africa, made in Kenya, is an initiative founded in 2010 and spearheaded by the ASOS Foundation. The foundation currently supports UK and overseas community activities in specifically Kenya and India. ASOS Africa aims to not only prep you for an amazing summer with a chic and stylish wardrobe, they help in the development and establishment of sustainable local businesses. The brand began its own campaign – Project Pipeline – in 2012, where clean water, and secondary education are provided to rural communities located around SOKO’s factory. ASOS Africa’s unique style sensibilities are the way forward this year! Even First Lady Michelle Obama has been spotted time and again rocking pieces from the collection during her 2011 visit to South Africa, as well as in the November 2012 issues of O Magazine.
