Zongo Communities of North America get New Chief
A rare blend of African and Islamic cultures at the Gauchos Gym in the Bronx went on show July 6 at the celebration of the coronation of Alhaji Abubakar Bala Brimah – aka Bala Soldier – as the Sarkin Zongo or the paramount chief of the Zongo communities of Ghana in North America. The Zongo communities of North America represent a predominantly Islamic community that originates from Ghana, West Africa.
The event whose guest of honor was Chief Ahmed Ibrahim, Chief of Wangara Kumasi in Ghana and president of the Zongo Chiefs Association of Ghana was attended by a cross-section of the Ghanaian community. The National Council of Ghanaian Associations in New York, (NCOGA) was represented by its current and immediate past Executive Secretary General G. Ofori Anor and Rose Eva Quarshie respectively. The Asantefuohene of New York was also on hand to add a bit of Ashanti culture to the ceremony. Chairman for the occasion was Alhaji Kadiri Danbaki.
In a short address, ESG Ofori Anor congratulated the new chief and promised the cooperation of the NCOGA. The Asantefuohene also congratulated his Zongo counterpart and urged him to listen more to his subjects. He pledged the cooperation of Asantefuo Association of New York. In his own address, the new Sarkin Zongo promised to cooperate with his cabinet. He pledged his allegiance to the Zongo community and the Ghanaian community in particular.
The cabinet of the new chief who were also turbaned individually included Galadeema Zongo(2nd in line) Alhaji Baba Allaino; Wazeeri Zongo(3rd in line); Alhaji Abu Musah Nixon; Uwar Sarki (Queen Mother) Hajia Abuyanma; Magajiyan Zongo Hajia Sharifa Ustaz; Gimbiya Hajia Juhaina; Akawu(Secretary) Mutawakil Swallah Adams; Sarkin Samari(organizer) Alhaji Awal Chitalo.
