NDC Gov’t is visionless
The 2012 vice presidential candidate of Ghana’s New Patriotic Party, Dr Mahamadu Bawumia has dismissed as laughable, miserable and without merit, the argument by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the protracted economy of Ghana is the result of the 8-month long Supreme Court petition by the New Patriotic Party. Dr. Bawumia pointed out that the election petition did not slow the rate of corruption under current government. He said it is only a visionless government that would propound such a miserable defense. ‘Propaganda and economic management cannot be mixed”, he added. Dr. Bawumia made this observation as keynote speaker at a Dinner Dance of the NPP-USA 2012 Congress held at the Embassy Suite Hotel, Charlotte, North Carolina, and challenged the ruling government to find a practical and lasting solution to the numerous problems that confront the country and advised it to quit the blame game. “It is not surprising that after five years in office, the NDC is still in stuck in the first gear”.
Speaking on the rhetorical and satiric theme mini sane, wei, aden, the renowned economist portrayed that the NDC government in the last five years has borrowed more money than money borrowed by all previous governments added together. He said money management is a vital tool of economic development. “You can have all the money you want, but if you don’t have the expertise to manage it, then you have problems” he inferred. Dr. Bawumia, a.k.a. Mr. Pink Sheet remarked that the NPP has significant economic differences with the ruling NDC government. “In terms of exchange rate” he added “we know how to stabilize the cedi”. He pointed out that notwithstanding oil production, Ghanaians still wallow on the lower rungs of the economic ladder; consumer confidence is in decline, the cedi has depreciated, tariffs and taxes have been raised and corruption continues unabated. According to the economics guru, his research shows that relative to earned income, Ghana pays the highest mortgage in the world. He described as unfortunate and counterproductive government’s decision to scrap the allowances of nurses and teachers, two vital institutions that anchor progress and development of a nation, and accused the government of squandering the peoples’ money nyafu – nyafu on election campaign. He insinuated that government has bastardized the economy by prioritizing Akomfem, GYEEDA, SADA through corruption. He said corruption has become endemic and fearless because Ghanaians are yet to see any serious prosecution as CHIRAC looks on unconcerned and helpless.
Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia swore in into office newly elected officers. Nana Agyei Yeboah (CT) retained the Chairmanship after five years in office. Others elected were Mr. Augustine Agbenaza (Washington D.C. MD, VA) General Secretary, Mr. Fred Kyei Asamoah (Charlotte, NC) Vice Chair and Mr. Collins Nuamah, Treasurer (MA). In a brief post election speech Nana Agyei Yeboah promised to be more diversified and inclusive and bring “all hands on board” this time around. In a reconciliatory concession speech, Dr. Philip Yaw Bannor the immediate past General Secretary who contested the chairmanship pleaded to continually work with and for NPP-USA in any way possible.
