N’djamena — High-ranking army officers were arrested Thursday morning after security forces foiled a coup attempt in the Chadian capital N’Djamena, according to authorities.
The other arrestees include military personnel and civilians, notably a lawmaker of opposition, police disclosed.
Security forces launched an operation against coup plotters in the suburbs of N’Djamena on Wednesday, the Chadian Ministry of Communication said in a communique.
The operation thwarted a plot prepared by a group of people for four months to derail the course of peace in the Central African country, the communique added.
There were at least 20 casualties in Wednesday’s shootout, in which a number of people were killed and more than a dozen injured, police said.
