Come get land – Chief

by Kofi Ayim

Nana Oduro Asiri Basayiadom II, the traditional ruler of Assin Breku has called on its citizens to help develop Assin and never to forget their roots. He made this remark during the celebrations of the 25thAnniversary of the Assin Association of USA held August 8, at East Orange, New Jersey. He said either individually or collectively he is prepared to lease land within his jurisdiction to developers to enhance the undergoing changes in Assin nation in recent years. “Engage potential and viable NGOs in the USA and come to Assin Breku, I’ll give you land to develop”, he charged. Nana Basayiadom heaped praises on the association for its contributions to Assin. He also recognized the role played by some individual Assin citizens such as the Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, Member of Parliament for Assin Central and Sir Sam Jonah, business tycoon.

In an anniversary message, the Chairman of the Association, Mr. Ambrose Amoakoh, traced the history of the association and paid glowing tribute to three current members, (including the Hon. Kennedy Agyapong), who were founding members. He said in its 25 years of existence, the Association has shipped educational materials that included books, computers, television and digital video recorders to secondary schools and the College of Education at Assin Foso. It has also, thus far, awarded over $5000.00 scholarships to needy students in the Assin school system, and diabetic needs to local health centers. Mr. Amoakoh said the association is open to non-Assin citizens as well, but threw a special challenge to bona fide citizens of Assin to be part of their august body. The event was chaired by Nana Nyarko Oforiwaa, paramount queen of the Owirenkyi traditional area of Kushea. An educational scholarship fundraising was launched. Assin Association of USA is a member of the Council of Ghanaian Associations, New Jersey. Present at the event were Nana Kwaku Marfo, Gyasehene of Akwadum, New Juaben, Nana Ayisiwaa Serwaa Agyei, Bechem Akyeamehemaa, and other dignitaries.
