Egypt: Prosecution Appeals Release of Mubarak Sons

24 June 2013

An Egyptian court ordered on Monday that Gamal and Alaa Mubarak be released on charges of illicit gains, if they are not detained on other charges.

The court’s order followed an appeal by the defendants against the Illicit Gains Authority’s decision to renew their detention.

The Authority has accused the sons of the deposed president of using their father’s political influence to make enormous fortunes.

The general prosecution appealed the court order immediately, blocking their release.

A Cairo criminal court ordered the two defendants’ release two weeks ago in the case of killing protesters during the 2011 uprising and on charges of stock market manipulation for exceeding the legal detention period.
