Egypt: Speculations On New Govt Structure

President-elect Mohamed Mursi has started negotiating with political forces to form a presidential team and new government, Al-Akhbar reported.

The Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) may elect Mohamed ElBaradei, former director of the International Atomic Energy Agency and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, to head the new government, said FJP deputy Mohamed al-Beltagy.

Former Finance Minister Hazem al-Beblawy is also nominated to head the anticipated government, Al-Shrouk reported, adding that spokesman of the Salafi Nour Party, Nader Bakar, denied the party’s rejection to suggesting ElBaradei for prime minister. Bakar added that ElBaradei and Beblawy are both patriotic figures who may head the government.

While ElBaradei was suggested to head the government, as a symbol of national unity, no consensus has so far been reached, said Gehad al-Haddad, Nour’s international affairs expert, on Britain’s BBC.

Coalition government with 30% from FJP

The anticipated government is expected to be a coalition government consisted mostly of independent figures who are qualified to manage the country’s affairs and fulfill Mursi’s promises, Haddad said.

Anonymous sources have said that the FJP will only control 30 percent of the anticipated government, Al-Akhbar reported.

Prominent individuals nominated for government are Essam al-Erian, Saad al-Husseini, Mohamed Abdel Moneim al-Sawy and Monir Fakhri Abdel Nour.

Sources confirmed that the election of a defense, interior and justice ministers will take place in agreement with the ruling military council, police and judiciary.

For the first time, female and Copt for vice-presidents

Mursi’s political advisor, Ahmed Deef, insisted that appointing two vice-presidents, a Coptic Christian and a woman, is the first step in the presidential agenda.

“For the first time in Egypt’s history, a woman will fill this post, which will not be a mere title but an actual post with authorities and powers,” Deef said on CNN.

Authorities of the anticipated presidential team not yet determined

The presidential team consisted of advisers will include five representatives from different factions, including a Salafi (ultraconservative) representative, Al-Akhbar reported.

Leading names suggested for the presidential team are political science professors Saif Abdel Fattah, Heba Raouf Ezzat, Rabab al-Mahdi and Rafeeq Habib, Al-Shrouk reported.

Political sources also reported that other suggested figures include Sameh Fawzi, Amin Isqandar, Abul Ela Madi, Safwat Hegazi, Hossam Eissa and Ziad Bahaa al-Din. – Aswat Masriya (Cairo)
