Ethiopia Prime Minister Meles Zenawi dies at 57

Addis Ababa — Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi has died at the age of 57, state TV announced on Tuesday.

Mr. Zenawi who was 57 has been sick for the last four months and was for two months receiving medical treatment in Europe for an undisclosed illness. He died around 11.45 pm local time on Monday.

He was said to be recovering in the last two weeks and was expected to be back in office before Ethiopian new-year 2005 turning in on September 11. His condition worsened in the past few weeks leading to his death on Monday.

Information reaching Amandla indicate that Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Haile Mariam Desalegn will be the acting PM.

The death of PM Zenawi follows closely after the untimely death of Ghana’s President John Atta Mills in July.
