Help build IC Center in Akwapim – delegates urged
by Kofi Ayim
Indigenes and friends of Akwapim Traditional Area in Ghana has been urged to help build an Information Technology Center at Akwapim in the Eastern Region of Ghana. This challenge was made during the 27th anniversary celebration of the Odwira Festival by the Okuapeman Association of USA and Canada (OKUSACA) September 1, at the Mack Center Hilton Hotel in Alexandria Virginia. The theme for this year’s event was “Youth Empowerment: OKUSACA’s Future.” The event was accordingly dedicated to Okuapeman Youth. OKUSACA currently has thirteen chapters.
In his welcome address, the outgoing Chair of OKUSACA Mr. Godwin Larbi enumerated projects undertaken by or with the help of OKUSACA back home in Ghana. He pointed out that the time has come to establish an IT Center to help the youth of Akwapim and beyond to be at par in the emerging trends of technology. Mr. Larbi therefore appealed to all to help bring to fruition this noble goal through various contributions. He also used the occasion to challenge citizens of Akwapim the world over to join hands to facilitate the socio-economic development of Akwapim.
The well -attended event attracted twelve traditional kings and queens from Ghana, the Hon. Opare Addo, DCE of Akwapim North, as well as throngs of local traditional leaders. The royalty from Ghana was led by Nana Kwasi Agyeman IV, Krontihene of Akwapim Traditional Area. Each of the eighteen towns of Akwapim traditional Area in Ghana was represented by a youth. The introduction of the town by each youth was accompanied by the town’s unique appellation. “Ahwerease,” one of the eighteen towns posed a challenge for its representative to the delight of all the 800 or so revelers at the function. The Youth of the New York Chapter entertained the crowd with cultural display. Earlier in the day, a keen quiz amongst the various youth chapters was won by Canada, with the New York and New Jersey chapters coming in second and third respectively.
The leadership baton of OKUSACA has been handed to the current President of Okuapeman Fekuw, New Jersey, Mr. Kwame Gyan, a conspicuous community leader.
