I will win Miss World 2013 – Miss Ghana 2012 assures Ghanaians

Miss Ghana 2012, Miss Naa Okailey Shooter has assured Ghanaians that she will win the 2013 Miss World crown.

The Ghanaian beauty queen will be representing the country at the 2013 edition of the beauty pageant which comes off on Saturday, September 28 at the Sentul International Convention Center, Jakarta, Indonesia.

Miss Naa Okailey Shooter, speaking in an interview with Myjoyonline.com after the launch of the 2013 edition of the Miss Ghana pageant at the Mahogany Hotel in Accra Tuesday, expressed confidence that this year’s winner will come from Ghana.

Time for Africa, time for Ghana
“I believe that this is the year for Africa and specifically this is the year for Ghana. When I stand on the stage I am not standing there as Naa Okailey, I’m standing there because I am representing my country Ghana and I don’t want to just make myself and my family proud, I want to make Ghana and Africa as a whole proud,” the aspiring medical doctor said.

According Naa Okailey, “in the history of Miss World we’ve just had one lady with black skin that was Miss Nigeria 2001 [winning the crown] and I want to be the next.”

She said she is confident of winning the crown because of “the Beauty with a Purpose aspect of Miss World. Miss World has embodied that so it’s not just about beauty but it’s about how you impact the life of society and as Miss Ghana I am impacting the life of the aged and the youth.”

Miss Shooter, who had to defer her medical course at the University of Ghana to be Miss Ghana, said her preparation towards this year’s pageant has been a learning curve for her: “Each day offers me an opportunity to learn more … day in day out I’m learning more and I’m being groomed so I am ready.”

Already, out of the about 129 contestants from across the world who are vying for the Miss World crown, Miss Ghana has been ranked among the top 15 contestants for the pageant by Missosology.

She said being Miss Ghana has “been challenging and a learning process because I was once in school and I had to take time off school to be a beauty queen. It’s been a great experience.”

Naa Okailey Shooter has been to several witch camps in the country and plans to commission a borehole for the Naboli Witch Camp in the Northern region.

For the first time, the pageant has introduced the Miss Ghana Foundation where beauty queens come together to tackle different projects for the betterment of society.

Miss Shooter revealed that, “As Miss Ghana, I took up health – infant and maternal mortality. The first phase of my project will be commencing end of this month, we are looking at renovating the floor of the Maternity Block of Korle Bu. That’s where you have pregnant women on the floor, women with their new born babies on the floor and I’m trying to change that.”

The second phase, she noted, will see her embark on several outreach programmes in the Northern region on nutrition, family planning and personal hygiene.

A revitalised 2013 Miss Ghana
Inna Maryam Patty, C.E.O, Exclusive Events Ghana, organizers of the Miss Ghana pageant told Myjoyonline.com in an interview that organizing the event for the first time last year was a learning curve for her outfit.

“Last year’s event was a big learning curve. We had our high points and our low points but nonetheless, it was exciting and this year we look forward to improving upon our performance,” she stressed.

With a barrage of criticisms hitting the event last year, including a poorly organized finale, the Miss Ghana 2004 winner said, “We are grateful for the constructive criticisms because we already agree that there is a lot of room for improvement. We look forward to improving this year,” to give Ghanaians a better pageant.

Unlike the past were organizers of the pageant scout for contestants at regional or zonal auditions, there will only one national audition in Accra from May 30 to June 1 at the Travel Express Hotel.

With the change, she explained, this year’s finals will be held in July and “the mouth-watering packages are thousands times much more in value,” this year.
