Liberia: Rep. Chambers – Peace Will Only Be Guaranteed If…

Maryland County Pleebo-Sodoken District Representative, Dr. Bhofal Chambers, has called on Liberian leaders to be “conscious-minded in justly seeking the warfare of their people.”

Rep. Chambers represents Maryland County Pleebo-Sodoken District in the House of Representatives on the ticket of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC). The CDC is considered as the leading opposition party in the country.

He said citizens continue to lack basic social services in the midst of abundant resources in Liberia because leaders put forth their personal aggrandizement instead of the interest of their people.

He said peace would only be guaranteed in the country if Liberians adequately benefit from the wealth and resources of the nation. The Maryland lawmaker made these comments when he addressed a news conference over the weekend in Monrovia.

According to him, the resources of the country belong to its people, and therefore, all Liberians must have ‘optimum benefits of the resources.’ He said leaders in the country, including the President, Senators and Representatives should serve their people with honesty, sincerity, accountability and quality.

He stated that offices being held by public officials are “privileged positions”, stressing public officials must place the interest of the people above theirs.

The Pleebo-Sodoken district lawmaker pointed out that if Liberia is to move forward in terms of growth and development, the acts of ‘corruption and nepotism’ by elected leaders should be discouraged.

Dr. Chambers said decisions or actions taken by elected officials should meet the consensus of their people. He urged the Government of Liberia (GOL) to ‘place emphasis on the citizens and environment’ before profit-making during the awarding of concession contracts to foreign companies.

“We have to at all cost look at the interest of our people and be more fiscal disciplined. We are all individuals given a pay grip to serve the best interest of our people. We must be conscious-minded in doing this because Liberia is all we have.

We should take sincerity and faithfulness as first principles. Peace can only be guaranteed by providing for our people, especially the ordinary citizens. People who worked must be justly compensated,” he stated.

The CDC lawmaker added: “If Liberia is to move forward, the responsibility is for all Liberians to collectively act to ensure that happens. Nothing is magical; everything we do is based on performance practice.

We expect our leaders to have the value of caring, honesty, accountability, integrity and responsive citizenship. Liberia depends on all of us. We all came into this world with nothing but today, what we have are all bonuses. We should remind ourselves that offices that we hold are all privileged positions. What we do must please our people.”
