Meet Dr. Wu, a primus inter pares in vascular medicine in Ghana

Dr. Lily Wu is the chief executive officer (CEO) of Rochester Health Consult, the only Vascular Specialist Clinic in Ghana. Sited in a prime location in Accra (Labone, a suburb in the capital), it serves as the sole Vascular Specialist care center, not only for Ghanaian patients, but also for other West African neighbors.

Dr. Wu works both as a practicing surgeon and as an educator in several medical schools and institutions. She is a Consultant Vascular Surgeon in Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), the first and premium tertiary teaching hospital in Ghana; an adjunct lecturer in Surgery at the School of Medicine and Dentistry, College of Health Sciences, University of Ghana; and also, a lecturer in Surgery at the Accra College of Medicine, a prestigious private medical school in Ghana.

Her passion for teaching was evident early in her career as a trainee surgeon when she opted for a teaching post in the University of Ghana’s School of Medicine and Dentistry as a clinical tutor, before she completed her fellowship training in General Surgery.

She was an instructor for the Basic Surgical Skills course at the University of Cape Town’s Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa, from 2015 to 2017 and has been an instructor for Basic Surgical Skills with the Medical and Surgical Skills Institute in Ghana since 2008.

She is a board-certified Consultant Vascular Surgeon with the Vascular Surgery Society of Southern Africa, the European Society of Vascular Surgeons, the West African College of Surgeons, and the Ghana College of Surgeons and Physicians.

From 2011 to 2015, she served as the chairperson for the Research and Training Unit of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. She also received training in minimally invasive surgery from the Nanfang Hospital in Guanghou China and a mini-fellowship in Colorectal Surgery and Pelvic Floor Surgery from University Hospital of Malmo, Sweden.

Her training in Vascular Surgery was at the Groote Schuur Hospital of the University of Cape Town, where she also obtained a Master’s degree in Vascular Surgery with a thesis on profile and risk factors of people of African descent with chronic limb-threatening ischaemia.

During the same period of training in South Africa, she also obtained a mini- fellowship in Vascular Surgery at University Hospital of Utrecht, in the Netherlands.

She has several seminal publications in Vascular and General Surgery in international journals and has given lectures and presented papers in many conferences and workshops.

She is known to perform many challenging operations, especially in Vascular Surgery via minimally invasive techniques using modern technology, to the admiration of both patients and colleagues, culminating in her winning of the Best Innovator Award in Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, considering that she is able to achieve such a feat even in a resource-constrained environment.

Other awards to her credit are the Gold Medal Award for the best performing candidate in Vascular Surgery examinations, the Gold Medal Award for best performance in General Surgery, the Best Overall Student for the MBChB Part I exams, and the University of Ghana Vice-Chancellor’s recognition for outstanding performance in 1997.

Her sterling performance as a teacher and the passion with which she works and teaches have won her many accolades from students, professionals, observers, and critics.
